Dental X-Rays

What to Expect: Dental X-Rays

March 2nd, 2020 Posted by Dental Health No Comment yet

Dental X-rays are an important dental tool, used often to diagnose a problem, or just get a picture of our overall oral health. So why are dental x-rays so important and what do they do? What can you expect if you need dental x-rays?

Different Kinds of X-rays

Not all Dental x-rays are the same thing. There are many different types of dental x-rays with different purposes and approaches. These include:

– Bitewing X-rays- Often used to get a better look at a problem area before filling a cavity or finalizing a treatment plan, or may be used once a year to get a closer look at specific areas.
– Panoramic X-rays- Often used as an overall oral health diagnostic tool. This gives the dentist a global picture of your dental health. This can also be used to prepare for oral surgery, or braces. Generally unless used for a specific purpose, a dentist may do this once every 3-5 years.
– Periapical X-Rays- A root to crown picture that gives a close up of one tooth, ruling out more serious problems and helping your dentist plan your treatment.

How X-Rays are Taken

You may be placed in a chair with an apron over you to protect the rest of your body from the radiation. Or you may be asked to stand for a panoramic X-ray. Either way, if you’re unsure what kind of x-ray, and how you can help get the best picture possible, ask the staff member taking the dental x-ray what it is, and what to do. They can help you understand more about the process and your role in it.

How they Affect Treatment and Diagnosis

Without a Dental x-ray, a dentist is essentially acting on what they can see with their naked eye, which is not the whole picture. X-rays give a more complete view of your mouth and its health, giving the dentist a better informed place to work from. They can tell the dentist about what’s going on where they can’t see, or how involved a specific treatment may be.

If you need a dental appointment for a cleaning, or are experiencing symptoms of a cavity, call our ElCampo Dental office to make an appointment with a dentist who may be able to help you determine when you are due for your next dental X-rays.

Oral Hygiene Checklist

Oral Hygiene Checklist

February 3rd, 2020 Posted by Oral Health No Comment yet

Checking an item off a list can be a satisfying exercise in accomplishment and empowerment. One important list we all need to check off daily is our oral hygiene checklist. We all know we should brush and floss twice daily, but here are some other helpful tips and tricks for effective daily hygiene.

Keep it Clean

Brushing and flossing twice daily is a foundational daily task we all learn about from early ages on. If you have braces, invisalign, or dentures, you may need to be even more vigilant about cleaning your mouth and teeth. Don’t forget to brush your gums, tongue, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth as well. This addition to your oral hygiene checklist can help prevent bad breath, and plaque build up.

To Rinse or Not To Rinse?

When brushing your teeth, remember to spit out remaining toothpaste, but avoid rinsing with water. This can dilute and wash away the remaining fluoride from your toothpaste, rinsing off the lasting effects of one of your most important daily oral hygiene checklist items. Rinsing away that fluoride can impede its effect on your enamel. If you must rinse your mouth after brushing, an alternative could be using a fluoridated mouthwash to rinse your mouth out instead.

Eat Well

Eating healthy foods that encourage oral health can mean avoiding foods that are high in sugars and acids. Also avoiding drinks that meet the same criteria, such as energy drinks or soft drinks. Instead, prioritize drinking water daily, and eat healthy fresh foods, such as crunchy fruits and vegetables.

Protect Yourself

Protect your teeth daily. If you play sports, a mouth guard may be a wise investment that saves you from costly mouth and jaw injuries.
Or, if you find yourself grinding and clenching your teeth at night, ask your dentist about a night guard that can protect your teeth.
There are many ways you can protect your teeth and mouth from injury, or harmful wear and tear.

Regular Dental Exams

Although not a daily task, it is important to see your dentist regularly. Your dentist can help you customize your daily oral hygiene routine for your specific needs and situation. Finding a dentist you trust is only the beginning of the investment in your daily oral health. Call our ElCampo Dental office today to set up your own dental exam. We can help you find the perfect daily oral hygiene checklist to meet your needs, and protect your oral health!

Gum sensitivity

5 Ways to Tackle Gum Sensitivity

January 3rd, 2020 Posted by Oral Health No Comment yet

Gum sensitivity can be uncomfortable and frustrating. Over half of U.S. adults 30 and over suffer from gum disease. There are many different things that can contribute to gum sensitivity. Here are 5 things you should know that can help you tackle the problem, and find the solution that works for you.

Take Care of Oral Hygiene

Oral Hygiene is the first defense against gum soreness and gum disease. Often gingivitis and Periodontitis are caused by plaque irritating the gums at and below the tooth line. Flossing and brushing well and often, using antiseptic mouth wash, and using a soft bristled brush can all help in maintaining gum health and may even be helpful to ease the gum sensitivity that you experience. You can also ask your dentist to recommend any products that will help with sensitive gums and teeth.

Say No to Smoking

Smoking isn’t just unhealthy, but it can contribute to sensitivity and soreness in your gums. It may also lead to gum disease in some cases.

Drink Water After Meals

Water can help maintain good oral hygiene, but is not a replacement for regular brushing and flossing. Drinking water can help wash away plaque causing remnants of sugars, acids, and food. Drinking water is one simple change that may very well improve your health, especially the health of your gums and mouth.

Eat Food Rich in Vitamin C

Vitamin C is your gum’s best friend, delivering nutrients that help them maintain their health and strength. A balanced diet rich in vitamin C and calcium can help maintain oral health and prevent gum sensitivity and gum disease.

Avoid Stress

Although easier said than done, curbing stress can affect your oral health beneficially. Prolonged periods of stress can release Cortisol, which increases inflammation throughout the body, including your mouth and gums. Taking time to relax and reduce stress isn’t just pleasant, it is a healthy habit that may be a help in reducing gum sensitivity.

Consulting with your dentist is a vital step in addressing gum sensitivity. Your dentist may be able to help pinpoint what is causing gum soreness, and help form a treatment plan that addresses your situation and concerns. Call our ElCampo Dental office and make an appointment if you are experiencing gum sensitivity and soreness. We would be glad to help you improve your oral health, so you can find plenty of reasons to smile!

Tooth enamel loss

Tooth Enamel Loss: What’s True?

December 2nd, 2019 Posted by Oral Health No Comment yet

Tooth Enamel is the hardest substance in the body, and yet it can be incredibly fragile. It protects our teeth, keeping them in a hard protective sheath. Tooth enamel loss can occur in a variety of ways, but once it is lost, it is gone, opening up our teeth to decay.

How Do I Know I’m Losing Enamel?

Some signs of tooth enamel loss can include increased sensitivity to hot and cold, or increased sensitivity to sweet foods. It can also affect the appearance of your teeth, causing them to be yellow or shiny. It can also cause your teeth to be rough at the edges, or cause indentations on the surface of your teeth. These are all signs enamel may be on the way out.

What Causes Tooth Erosion?

Although some tooth enamel loss can be caused by age, it can also be caused by foods containing sugars or acids. Foods high in sugar can wear away at the enamel as bacteria feeds on the sugar producing chemicals that erode the enamel. Foods high in acid can also be a cause of erosion, as can frequent exposure to stomach acid. Dry mouth can compound the problem, producing less saliva and leaving the mouth more vulnerable to the effects of sugar or acid on the teeth.

Another cause for enamel loss may be abrasion. Using abrasive products and hard bristled toothbrushes can contribute to this. You can ask your dentist about what products are most likely to protect your enamel and prevent erosion.

What Can I Do About It?

Oral Hygiene is an important part of preventing tooth enamel loss. Using fluoride toothpaste while brushing and flossing at least 2 times a day can help protect teeth and prevent erosion. Rinsing your mouth with water after eating acidic foods can help as well. Wait at least an hour to brush after eating acidic foods, as acid softens the enamel itself.

Chewing Sugar Free Gum can help your mouth produce the saliva needed, preventing a dry mouth that may leave teeth exposed to factors that encourage erosion.

Regular cleanings can be helpful in spotting any tooth enamel loss or subsequent cavities, so that you and your dentist can spot damage that has already occurred, or prevent further damage to your teeth. Make an appointment for a cleaning at our ElCampo Dental office, and let us help you find the tools you need to protect your teeth and prevent tooth enamel loss.

The importance of flossing

March 12th, 2015 Posted by Dental Care No Comment yet

If you have established a good flossing habit, then congratulations! According to a few studies you are among a minority of Americans taking proper care of their teeth.

There is a reason why the dentist asks you every time you visit them if you have been brushing your teeth. It’s simple really; they ask because it’s important. Flossing gets in those small, hard to reach crevices in your mouth which are the same areas that are most likely to get cavities.
